Summer Plants for Your Home

Summer time brings the bright colors and pleasant smells of all the summer time plants. Planting the right flowers and trees for the summer can make sure that everyone can enjoy all that the summer season has to offer. Here are some of the best summer plants:

  • Portulaca – sometimes called the office plant because it begins blooming at 10 a.m. and goes to sleep at 5 p.m., this rose like flower has no smell. It is available in multicolor and multilayered varieties.
  • Zinnia – a long stemmed, multicolored flower that is part of the sunflower family. It is available in single colors, or a combination or red, white, pink, yellow, and purple. Zinnia is available in multilayered petals and single, and blooms until the beginning of winter.
  • Gaillardia – this flower is very easy to maintain, and needs very little care. It has a round ball shaped flower that comes in combinations or red, yellow, and brown.
  • Calliandra – this powder puff shaped red and pink flower blooms all summer long. Some flowers remain throughout the year, but it is most active in the summer.

There are also many trees that bloom in the summer while still providing shade on the hot summer days. Indian cork trees are a good summer tree, since the provide lots of shade and bloom with golden white flowers.

The hot summer weather means you may have to care for your plants slightly different than you would during cooler temperatures. Make sure your plants are properly watered, without over watering them, which could damage the roots and possible kill the plant. The best times to water are in the early mornings or evening. Avoid watering during the hottest parts of the day.
