Add color to your garden with this easy-to-grow flower. Here’s a guide on how to plant and care for lilies in Thousand Oaks, CA.
Lilies are a great choice for your garden. Not only do they bring huge blooms of bright colors like orange, pink, and yellow to your yard, they’re also surprisingly easy to grow and don’t require a lot of ongoing care. What’s more, if you strategically intersperse early, mid-season, and late blooming varieties in your planting beds, you’ll get blooms from early spring to the first frost. Here’s a year-round guide to lily planting and care.
Plant your lily bulbs in the fall. If you missed the train, don’t worry! We’re giving you this guide now so you can be ready this year because lilies need a cold, dormant period to thrive. Plant your bulbs in an area with good drainage and full sun. Loosen the soil at least a foot into the ground so the bulbs can root, and plant the bulb at least 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall.
Make sure you keep the bulbs moist.
Freely water the lilies unless they’re getting rain. Each spring, spread a thin layer of compost over the bulbs and top with mulch. Keep the area mulched to protect the lilies. Remove faded flowers (they won’t re-bloom), but leave the foliage until it browns in the fall. After you remove the browned leaves, apply a thick layer of mulch (between 4 and 6 inches) and leave it to protect the bulbs against any winter chill.
